As much as I love summer, I’m partial to cooler temperatures and all the beautiful colors fall brings. Rich reds, oranges, and yellows mixed with shades of green — the perfect color palette for decorating the front of the house and bringing your porch to life.
This season, we’ve gathered our favorite decoration ideas below to help you create a warm and welcoming entryway (or back patio!).
Before we get to decor, check out the Top 3 Finalists for our 2018 Fall Front Porch Giveaway. Choose your favorite space below. Voting is live October 10 – 12th, 2018. The space with the most votes will win a Vineyard 3-Piece Deep Seating Rocking Chair Set!
1 | Pumpkins
Pumpkins are a fall front porch staple, but if you’re yearning for a decorative twist pair the standard orange pumpkins with pastel and green pumpkins. This softer color scheme will maintain an airy feel to front porches that utilize subtler design elements.
When decorating your porch with multiple fall elements light-colored pumpkins ensure the overall effect doesn’t become overwhelming.
2 | Flowers
We know many of your favorite flowers are no longer in bloom once the summer passes, but don’t neglect the flower tailor-made for the fall — chrysanthemums. Mums boast a variety of colors and bloom shapes, and with the great cover they provide can really add dimension to your front porch. Plant some colorful mums in the window boxes on either side of your front door or fill an assortment of planter sizes that you can place up your porch steps.
Looking for other great autumn flowers and foliage? Layer in a variety of annual fall plants including Flowering Kale, Purple Fountain Grass, Croton, Dianthus, and Black-Eye Susan.
3 | Wreaths
Handmade wreaths have become their own art form. You can head to the store and grab a pre-made fall wreath, or browse Etsy for artisan fall wreaths to create a stunning centerpiece for your front porch.
Looking for a DIY project? Get the entire family involved in a DIY fall wreath project you can complete on a cloudy afternoon! Choose between dozens of fall wreath ideas and get started.
4 | Lanterns
Outdoor lanterns are a terrific investment to make your front porch more dynamic and practical. Filling decorative lanterns with candles will create perfect mood lighting for sharing a drink in your favorite POLYWOOD® Jefferson Woven Rocking Chair Set as the pink light of dusk slowly fades from purple to black.
Or, get creative with your lanterns and fill them with mini pumpkins and guards!
5 | Hay Bales
While hay bales may appear out of place in more modern homes, they are perfect for adding a rustic, natural touch to your outdoor decorations. Situate a few hay bales on your porch next to your front door so the kids can showcase their painted and carved pumpkins with pride, or they can even be used for extra seating.
6 | Corn and Corn Stalks
We woudn’t be true Indiana natives if we didn’t suggest adding some corn to your fall display!
Flanking your front door with corn stalks will add height and texture to your fall flowers and pumpkins. And don’t feel like you have to stick to plain yellow corn — some of the best ornamental corn can vary from vibrant blues and reds to whites and yellows.
7 | Painted Welcome Signs
Painted wood signs have exploded in popularity, and they make fantastic fall entryway decorations with a touch of rustic flare. Below are a few of our fall themed favorites from Etsy:
8 | Pillows, Cushions & Blankets
When your front porch is designed so that natural elements minimally affect the space you can’t go wrong with some good old-fashioned creature comforts. Blankets, pillows, and cushions allow you to easily change your front porch color palette while making the entrance to your home feel cozy and inviting.
Our favorite combinations:
- Adirondack Chairs & Rocking Chairs
- Deep Seating
- Benches & Swings
A logical place to keep blankets is to drape them across a bench or swing – the POLYWOOD® Vineyard Deep Seating Swing is available in six colors of low-maintenance, recyclable lumber and eleven shades of Sunbrella® cushion fabric so you can easily coordinate your color scheme.
Our bench and swing cushions are also the perfect accessories for a quick pop of color — seen below in Sunbrella’s Astoria Lagoon fabric.
9 | Welcome Doormat
Don’t overlook this basic but essential front porch decoration! Doormats are practical and can add personality to more neutral outdoor spaces. Spice up your home’s entryway during the fall season with a festive welcome mat that also can keep your hallway clear of dirt and grime.
Below are a few we’ve had our eye on this season:
10 | Furniture
Rocking chairs are a front porch staple, and as the leaves turn to orange and gold a complete POLYWOOD Rocking Chair Set will provide the ultimate spot to relax and take in the view.
Of course, rockers are just the tip of the iceberg — don’t forget benches, swings, and Adirondack chairs! A Vineyard Bench adds practical seating to any front porch, while a Classic Folding Adirondack Set will last for countless falls without cracking, rotting, or fading with use. Choose a vibrant color for your Adirondack chairs to better align with your fall aesthetic!
